Venezuela's Chavez in the News

Sunday July 3, 2005
Che Guevara's Daughter Writes Chavez Bio (AP) : "Guevara met with Chavez twice in February of 2004 in Caracas, Venezuela for the interview. In the 145-page book, the president talks about his childhood in the southwest region of Barinas, where he was born in 1954, and his close relationship with his grandmother Rosa Ines, who raised him... The Venezuelan leader also speaks openly about his children, his political life and his friendship with Castro."
In other news about the Venezuelan president, Venezuela's Chavez creates Caribbean energy pact (Reuters) "under which Venezuela will directly supply cheaper oil to its partners, will cut the energy bills of Caribbean states whose small island economies are struggling to cope with soaring world oil prices." This is seen as "a move that strengthened Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's political challenge to U.S. influence in the region."
Furthermore, Chavez's 'citizen militias' on the march (BBC News): "Over recent months, the populist president has warned that the US may invade Venezuela or try to assassinate him. He has called for Venezuelans to join a new civil reserve defence force, which, it is claimed, numbers two million members."
