Lake Titicaca - Cradle of Inca Civilization

Friday January 6, 2006
Isla del Sol, Lake Titicaca According to Incan mythology, Manco Capac and Mama 0cllo, also known as Mama Huaca, emerged from the depths of Lake Titicaca on the sacred rock gate on Isla Del Sol to found the Inca Empire. The lake is still sacred to the Aymara people and is also the center for archaeological and cultural studies as well as a favored tourist destination.
Isla del Sol, seen here, is one of the treasures of Lake Titicaca. Offshore from Copacabana, Bolivia, the island boasts white sandy beaches, Inca stone ruins and terraces, and splendid views of the lake and the Andes beyond.
