José Gervasio Artigas is Uruguay's greatest hero. He fought the wars of Independence from Spain, struggled against both Brazilian and Argentine dominion, and June 19, the anniversary of his birth, the Natalicio de Artigas, is a national holiday.

The Mausoleo de Artigas is located in the Plaza de Independencia in Montevideo.
