Thursday July 13, 2006
In response to a request from Colombia to make a special declaration for Malpelo, part of an archipelago about 500 km east of Buenaventura, Colombia's main Pacific port, UNESCO agreed and Colombia's Malpelo Fauna, Flora Sanctuary added to heritage list (China View).

"Malpelo, an island with an area of 350 hectares, is a refuge for many endangered marine species, including fish, sharks, marine mammals and turtles." It's also a favored scuba diving location.

In other news from Colombia, 8,000 Colombian evacuated after Galeras volcano erupts (people's Daily Online): "The Colombian government on Wednesday ordered evacuation of 8,000 people from the areas close to the Galeras Volcano, in the southeastern department of Narino, which began erupting on Wednesday.

The nearly 4,300-meter volcano began erupting at 10:58 local time (1758 GMT) with a loud explosion that was heard within a radius of several kilometers, after it rained ash on the towns of Genoy, Narino and La Florida and spewed out an eight km column of smoke."
