A treasure of a town in the mountains of Brazil (Houston Chronicle): "Over the mountains from the glitz and poverty that is the ying-yang of Rio de Janeiro, the sprawling inland city of Belo Horizonte vibrates and clatters much like Houston.
But from there, a trip of two or three hours on well-tended mountain highways, past patches of rain forest and hulking ore-processing facilities, earns a radically different setting.
Ouro Preto, meaning "black gold" in Portuguese, is at almost 4,000-feet elevation and offers charm, innocence and the feel of Europe through the mist that sometimes rolls off the mountains. If the Portuguese had never discovered gold and silver here about 300 years ago, perhaps much of the land would still be wilderness."
