New Train Service Between Lima and Huancayo, Peru

Wednesday December 6, 2006
altiplano of Peru Travel to Huancayo from Lima by train (Living in Peru): "The rail company, Ferrocarril Central Andino (FCA), announced its new rail service to the city of Huancayo from downtown Lima." Huancayo is in central highlands, or altiplano, of the Andes Region of Peru.

"The Monserrate Station was officially presented yesterday and will be open to the public beginning on Thursday, December 7, taking advantage of the long holiday weekend in Peru. The new service is tentatively scheduled for 20 trips during 2007, with each trip beginning and ending in the Monserrate Station in downtown Lima.

This new service permits an alternative for many that are growing suspect of Peru’s internal bus system."

This service is particularly timely after the recent bus accident in southern Peru. 45 die as bus falls 1300ft into ravine {Evening Times) "Forty-five people died when a bus speeding through fog on a twisting mountain road plunged 1320ft into a ravine. Only the bus driver and a five-year-old boy survived the accident in Puno, on the border with Bolivia, 530 miles south-east of Lima. They suffered minor injuries."

More details about the crash and the situation in southern Peru: 50 passengers die in another horrific bus accident in Peru (Living in Peru): "At least 50 people died in an accident on the Carabaya-Puno highway near the border to Bolivia in Southern Peru, when a bus of the "Madre de Dios" company fell into an abyss of approximately 500 meters.

Rescue efforts have become increasingly difficult because nearby highway blockades erected by protesting settlers are preventing medical units and firemen from accessing the area."
