New Policies for the Galapagos Islands To Be Determined Shortly

Galapagos Giant Tortoise Following the concerns of the Ecuadorian government which led to declaring the Galapagos at risk with a possible suspension of tourist permits, a UNESCO Mission confirms threat to Galapagos Islands (UNESCO World Heritage Center): "The mission confirmed the threat to the outstanding value and physical integrity of this iconic World Heritage site mainly from: the growing encroachment of invasive species, increasing human immigration, uncontrolled development of tourism, and the failure of various institutions and agencies to deal with these threats."

The actions to be taken to mitigate the exisitng damage and prevent further threats will be decded with a "series of new policies to be adopted in the coming two weeks."
