6.2 Earthquake in Southern Chile Caused Panic and Fatalities

Sunday April 22, 2007
Update:
Chile to evacuate fjord hit by waves (AP): " The government said Monday it will evacuate residents and businesses from the banks of a fjord in southern Chile where 10 people were swept away by 26-foot waves following a powerful earthquake. "

Deadly Quake Strikes Chile's Aysén Region (The Santiago Times): "Search and rescue efforts continued in Region XI Sunday, one day after a substantial earthquake and subsequent “mini tsunami” struck near the towns of Puerto Aysén and Puerto Chacabuco. So far authorities have located the bodies of three people who were swept away Saturday by massive waves in the Aysén Fjord. Seven others are still missing."

So far ten people are missing and presumed dead after landslides fell into Aysén Fjord and created massive waves. See map of northern Patagonia. Puerto Aysén , also spelled Aisen, in Chilean Patagona has suffered numerous earthquakes since the beginning of the year.

Earlier quakes were attributed to activity in Hudson Volcano, but the theory now is that an underground magma flow is to blame. The force might eventually surface and create another volcano. Hudsin is only one of hundreds of the volcanos of Chile.
