Trip across the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia

Monday July 2, 2007
Salar de Uyuni SALT AND SKY: The remote Salar de Uyuni salt desert in Bolivia is a land of extremes (freep.com): Report of a trip through the salt apn. "Salar de Uyuni is the largest salt flat in the world, roughly 25 times the size of the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Some 40,000 years ago, it was part of Lake Minchin, a prehistoric salt lake. Today it is a popular tourist attraction for its natural wonder, salt islands and a now-closed hotel made almost entirely of salt."

Photo of a portion of the salt flat expanse is displayed with the kind permission of Peter and Jackie Main.

Enjoy more images in the photographic tour of Salar de Uyuni in the Andes and Altiplano Regions of Bolivia.
