New Salt Hotel in the Salar de Uyuni

Friday July 27, 2007
Salar de Ununi "Found on the crystaline flats of the Salar de Uyuni desert in Southern Bolivia, this hotel is one of a handful of properties made entirely from blocks of salt. Until recently, the only inhabitants of this harsh and arid environment were salt miners who have mined the dried up lake bed for centuries." Photo at Salt Hotel Bolivia (Lost Weekend)

The Sal de Uyuni is considered the world's largest salt pan. With a surface area of some 12,000 sq. km., the salar is an enormous, completely flat, blindingly white plain, baked dry by the sun.

View of the vast salt flat is displayed with the kind permission of Peter and Jackie Main.
