November is the perfect month to visit South America. As the weather starts to get warmer across the region there are a number of national holidays and important festivals that could be the highlight of any holiday.
I once stumbled into Cuenca Ecuador on November 1st only to find out that it was the busiest time of the year for this colonial city. And while it looked like all the hotels were booked a woman who owned a small hotel saw me wandering the streets and kindly offered me the last room at her place for the bargain price of $10 a night.
I ended up staying for All Saints Day and Cuenca Independence Day and it remains one of my favourite moments in Ecuador. But I would recommend finding a place to stay in advance as I was far too lucky!
