The Andes run through western Bolivia in two separate Cordilleras, the Cordillera Occidental, closer to the Pacific, and the Cordillera Real, which first runs southeast, then turns to cut across central Bolivia, becoming the Cordillera Central. Between the cordilleras is the vast, nearly treeless area known as the altiplano. At the southern end of the altiplano are the barren salt lakes called salars.

Lake Titicaca
At the northern end of the altiplano is Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, and shared by Bolivia and Peru. It is the birthplace of the Inca civilization.
Yungas and Rainforest
North and East of the Cordillera Real is the transition zone between the Andes and the Amazon, called Yungas, which means valleys. High mountain roads, tropical mists, hot and humid climate, and fertile agricultural areas distinguish this region of Bolivia.
