A Visit to Ouro Preto, Brazil
At the height of the gold and diamond boom in the mid 18th century, Ouro Preto, or Black Gold, was the richest town in South America and the capital of Minas Gerais state. When the ore petered out, the capital was moved to Belo Horizonte and Ouro Preto settled into a long snooze. Now it is a gem of colonial architecture, a university town and as yet, not over-ridden by tourists.

Historic Town of Ouro Preto
Founded at the end of the 17th century, Ouro Preto (Black Gold) was the focal point of the gold rush and Brazil's golden age in the 18th century. With the exhaustion of the gold mines in the 19th century, the city's influence declined but many churches, bridges and fountains remain as a testimony to its past prosperity and the exceptional talent of the Baroque sculptor Aleijadinho.

Minas Gerais
"The French geologist Gorceix summed up Minas Gerais 150 years ago, when he wrote that the state had "a breast of iron and a heart of gold". Its hills and mountains contain the richest mineral deposits in Brazil, and led to the area being christened "General Mines" when gold and diamonds were found at the end of the seventeenth century."

"The Route of Gold rambles along rugged mountains from the beautifully preserved colonial gold mining towns of Ouro Preto and São João del Rei to the ancient seaport of Paraty. This bounty of gold provided the wealth to build the royal colonial seat of Rio de Janeiro as well as the Old World capital, Lisbon."
