Cueca
The cueca is a national dance of Chile. It has its origins in
colonial times and is a barnyard courtship in which the man
dances the part of the rooster. The woman dances the part of
the hen.
The man first advances towards his female partner in a courting fashion.
She retreats, establishing the patter of pursuer and pursued.
As the courting continues, both partners hold their handkerchiefs aloft and
flick them around as they step in a smooth, shuffling manner, until, at
last, the rooster catches the hen.
