How To Acclimatize to the Altitude

Altitude sickness, soroche or puno, occurs at elevations above 2424 m. (8000 ft) in the Andes. Adjusting to decreased oxygen takes several days. Here's how to make it easier.

Time Required: 60 minutes to several days after arrival
Here's How:
  1. Recognize the symptoms: hyperventilation, shortness of breath during exertion, increased urination, change in sleeping habits, awaking during the night, weird dreams.
  2. Additional symptoms may include loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, fatigue, light-headedness, staggering walk.
  3. Do not go any higher until your body acclimatizes to the altitude.
  4. Drink plenty of liquids to prevent dehydration.
  5. Get plenty of rest.
  6. Take a mild analgesic (acetaminophen, aspirin, or ibuprofen) for headache.
  7. Do not drink alcohol.
  8. Do not take sleeping pills.
  9. Do not take narcotics.
  10. If symptoms are severe, seek medical help or return to a lower altitude.
