Legend has it that the Uros people took refuge from other indigenous civilizations on the floating islands. They adapted their culture to make use of the tortora reeds for all purposes.

Pumas and other animals lend their strength and protection to the reed boats and their sailors.

The waters of Lake Titicaca are cold. Local residents bundle up against the cold and wear the traditional wool hats for warmth and protection from the sun.

These sailboats are in the harbor of Suriqui island, offshore Huajataja, the home of the artisans who built the tortora reed boat for Thor Heyerdahl, Ra II, to sail from Morocco to South America.

The Bolivian navy is based at San Pedro Straits, Tiquina, and uses fast speedboats.
