Salvador's Carnaval throbs with afoxé music and enthusiasm. Billed as the largest street carnival on Earth because the city sets aside fifteen miles of streets on three circuits for six days of parades, Salvador's carnaval is considered Brazil's seond largest.

The third largest takes place also in the the northeast, in Recife where the music is forro, or for all, a frenetic, beguiling tempo that gets every part of your body moving.

Carnival in Recife and Olinda "is said to be the most beautiful, spontaneous and diverse of all the Carnivals in Brazil." Joined together the carnaval participants in Recife and Olinda "immerse themselves in the ecclectic sounds of Frevo (typical music of Pernambuco), Maracatu, Coco (of African origin), and Coboclinhos (of Indian origin). Manifesting the rich cultural backgrounds of Brazil, these unique rhythms originated from Africa and the indigenous cultures of Brazil.
