With apologies to the poet, the Survivors must be wondering what they've done to deserve hunger, heat, and above all, thirst. If they don't get fire soon to boil water, will they resort to drinking contaminated water as Susan did?
The first episode ended with the Saboga team having to vote out the first Survivor and trudging back to camp wet, dispirited, thirsty and still without fire. Will they fare any better in this episode?
Episode 2 begins on Day 4 with unrelenting rain. The tribes are dehydrated, cold, and hungry. At Saboga camp, they collect rainwater while Jerri Manthey, originally from 'The Australian Outback', complains of the cold and a sleepless night, but Rudy Boesch, originally from 'Pulau Tiga', tells stories from his Vietnam war experience.
In Mogo Mogo camp, most the tribe members collect rain water while huddling under their shelter. Meanwhile, Richard Hatch originally from 'Pulau Tiga', and the first Sole Survivor, walks about naked in the rain. Lex van den Berghe, originally from 'Africa', says he's not bothered or even uncomfortable with a "gay, naked man," and his fellow Survivors seem to agree.
Chapera team actively collects rain water while singing and doing a "water dance."
First suprise are the locked boxes with three padlocks, one per tribe. Saboga and Mogo Mogo teams try to guess what's inside, while Rob Mariano, originally from 'Marquesas', of Chapera tribe suggests they break open the box. His team mates disagree.
At the Reward Challenge, Mogo Mogo and Chapera teams are surprised and a bit leery at seeing Tina Wesson gone. Host Jeff Probst informs them the prize for the Stairways To The Stars challenge are blankets. The prize goes to the first tribe to build a staircase out of five logs that adrift at sea. The tribes need to swim out to retrieve each log, with each tribe losing a member after each plank was recovered so that only one castaway is left to retrieve the final log. Chapera tribe sits Tom Buchanan, originally from 'Africa', out and Mogo Mogo tribes beaches Jenna Morasca, originally from 'The Amazon.'
Chapera takes a strong lead, even though Rudy is having trouble swimming and helping with the logs, Saboga takes over the lead and keeps it. Ethan swims out for the last log and the Saboga tribe climbs their ladder to win the reward.
Jeff announces another surprise: Saboga can trade their reward for a clue to help them find the first key to the lock box, flint for fire and a pot for cooking. However, there's a caveat: if Saboga chooses the clue, flint and pot, then all three tribes get the same Reward. After deliberating, Saboga chooses the clue, flint and pot to the rejoicing cheers of the other two tribes.
The tribes head back to camp, `where Saboga and Chapera work at getting a fire started. Rudy mentions he's a better outdoorsman with a lighter, but does a victory dance when they produce flame with their flint, then a fire. Unfortunately, Jenna Lewis, originally from 'Pulau Tiga', leans in too close to blow on the tiny flame and gets her hair singed.
Chapera gets their fire going with interminable instructions from Alicia Calaway, originally from 'The Australian Outback', which irks her teammates.
Chapera and Mogo Mogo tribes discuss their reactions to Tina Wesson's ouster. People mention they thought Rudy, being the eldest, would be the first to go, and Richard says this sets the tone. It's business this time.
Mogo Mogo begins starting a fire as the rains start and then disagree about trying it then or waiting until the rain stops. They huddle for warmth during the night, but get their fire the next morning before they head out to look for the first key, of three, to open their box. It's hidden somewhere in a cave and Richard finds it quickly. He says that this isn't Survivor, which is the "interpersonal stuff" between the Survivors.
At Saboga, Rudy walks along the beach, noticeably limping. His foot or ankle injury worries the others, who hope that the next challenge wont' involve running.
