Episode 5 begins with Jon rehashing Burton's expulsion with Shawn, who after spending most of his time with Burton, badmouths him publicly but feels he's betrayed Burton. Michelle is worried, after being the sole vote for Christa, that she is now vulnerable. She feels quite alone.
In Morgan camp, Rupert displays his leadership qualities by teaching Ryan to fish and providing for the Morgan tribe. He insists they move their shelter inland, away from the tides. Osten and others aren't convinced, but after a vote, they move the shelter away from the water's edge.
Back on Drake island, the castaways wonder what Rupert is doing and eagerly await his return. Meanwhile, Rupert is hungry and thirsty and sees how little work the Morgan tribe does. When he and Ryan return with fish, an appreciative Tijuana kisses him, and Andrew recognizes his value. The tribe members congratulate themselves for getting Rupert who shows his worth once again in the Reward Challenge. He says he wants to prove his valued to his Drake tribe members.
The challenge is for a water prize, consisting of a portable shower, a jerry can and bathing supplies. Both teams are thrilled with the idea of getting clean. The challenge is to paddle out to four chests floating above two pieces to a ladder. When all pieces are retrieved, one tribe member will run into the jungle to find a golden idol while the remaining castaways will assemble the ladder to reach a platform on which to place the idol.
Without Rupert, the Drake team, with Jon navigating, can't row or steer their canoe very well and are immediately left behind with Rupert paddling and diving for the Morgan team. Morgan retrieves all the ladder pieces and returns to shore, while Drake teams flounders. Andrew races into the jungle and is returning with the idol as Drake team lands and Michelle races off. Andrew climbs the ladder and Morgan team claims their second win.
Given the chance to stay, shower and then be returned to the Drake camp, or leave right away with his tribe, Rupert elects the latter, saying he wants to "go home" with his tribe. Once back on their island, the other members welcome him back. Rupert reports on Morgan tribe's lack of food, citing the few remaining handfuls of rice they have left, and Osten's lack of effort.
Morgan tribe enjoys their baths as well as their triumph, saying they now have the Drake tribe spooked. When Andrew arrives at the Drake camp to loot their first prize, Rupert encourages him to take rice, and gives him more. Both are happy with the deal, since both know that they will have to deal with each other again. Rupert worries that his friendliness to Andrew may cause trouble for him. As he said, "There is probably a lot of danger in being too much in control of both tribes. Who knows what my own tribe even thinks of me? But if I push too hard, I will end up alienating someone." He rescues and bandages a small, wounded snake he names Balboa.
When word of the Immunity Challenge comes in, Drake tribe realizes it will mean eating some disgusting food. They develop a strategy based on Michelle's boast that she can eat anything. She'll pretend to gag and have difficulty under the assumption that the Morgan team will see her weakness and choose her to represent Drake tribe. All tribe members are squeamish about what they'll have to eat, and when they see an assortment of raw seafood and a blender, they blanch. Jeff announces he will make the Seafood Smoothies.
The first rounds are eaten at their leisure and the food determined by a roll of a roulette-type wheel. The final round is a timed round, with host Jeff Probst choosing the ingredients: red shellfish, sardines, razor clams, bleeding clams, sea water, squid, mango, rock oysters, conch, octopus, coconut juice and an ingredient of Jeff's choosing. Michelle, rather than making a show of gagging and forcing her smoothie down, swallows it readily, and when the teams are neck and neck for the final round, each tribe chooses a member of the opposing tribe for the final round. Rather than Michelle, Sandra and Darrah compete to swallow a blended concoction and a sardine. Sandra has a great deal of trouble, while Darrah turns her back and swallows both smoothie and the sardine first to win the second Immunity challenge.
