Now, the 2211 sq km Parque Nacional Archipielago Los Roques still has only one village, Gran Roque, looking very much as it always has, but it is a favorite destination for Venezuelans who make the 30 minute flight from Caracas with ease. It's also an international favorite with divers, snorkelers and ecotourists.
Since the park commission has strict regulations prohibiting new buildings and restricts the number of visitors allowed in the archipelago at any one time, the islands retain their serenity and allure without overcrowding. Some of the original buildings have been remodeled into posadas and are reasonably priced. You can choose one with all meals provided, and for an extra charge, a day of guided touring. Except for high season, you don't need reservations. There is no regular boat service to the islands, but private arrangements can be made from La Guaira, Caracas' port. You can also charter your own yacht.
Things to do and see:
- Beaches are soft white sand and great for sunbathing, swimming and resting.
- The coral reefs offer superb snorkeling and scuba diving. Diving expeditions, certified instructors and equipment are available. The submarine caves, colorful fish and coral make diving here a pleasure.
- Windsurf.
- Sail in and around the many islands, find a deserted lagoon or bay and enjoy the multi-hued water.
- Birding to see pelicans, gulls, white herons and other species.
- Currently, Linea Turisticas Aerotuy is the only tour company that offers flights, lodging and catamaran options to the park. The cats are luxurious and tour the archipelago with stops for snorkeling and kayaking.
Tip:
There is very little shade on the islands. Come prepared with lots of sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and drink plenty of water. Do not get dehydrated.
Enjoy Parque Nacional Archipielago Los Roques!
