How To Pack Useful Items

By Bonnie Hamre, About.com

Need a quick repair? Extra storage? Here are some great tips on things which don't weight much, but will be very useful during your travels.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: A day or two before departure

Here's How:

  1. Pack extra shampoo for washing clothes in the sink.
  2. Dental floss isn't just for teeth. It's also good for mending.
  3. Adhesive tape for mending currency, papers, etc.
  4. Sturdy mending tape for luggage and other hardy items.
  5. If you're traveling with another person, pack half your belongings in each other's bags. If one suitcase is lost, you'll still have clothing.
  6. Pack liquids (in containers) and damp items in plastic, resealable bags.
  7. Take large garbage sacks for packing used or damp clothing.
  8. Take dryer softener sheets in a plastic bag and use to keep the contents of your suitcase smelling fresh.
  9. Pack women's shoes within men's shoes.
  10. Pack one or two days clothing and your valuables in your carry-on.
  11. Use a cloth cooler bag as your carry-on. You'll use it on daily outings.
  12. Diaper bags make great carryalls even if you don't have young children.
  13. Use non-aerosol products.
  14. Make a first aid kit with bandages, etc., for small mishaps.
