Altiplano and the Salar de Uyuni
The Salar de Uyuni in the altiplano of southwestern Bolivia, is the remnant of an inland sea, or giant salt water lake that once covered this terrain up to Lake Titicaca. The water evaporated into the thin, dry Andean air leaving behind a thick layer of salt, about 30 feet deep.
Below the surface layer, there are an estimated 10 or 11 more layers, each from 6.5 to 32 feet deep. There is about 64 billion tons of salt in the salar, considered the largest in the world.
Now this area draws visitors who come in awe of the sun-bleached terrain.
