Altiplano and the Salar de Uyuni
Salt Pyramids in Colchani
The villagers of Colchani pile up salt in these pyramid-shaped mounds with picks and shovels and let the salt dry. When dry, the salt is taken to the town to be cleaned. Iodine is added to prevent goiters and the salt is ready for market.
Salt building bricks last a very long time where there is little or no rain.
Visitors can visit the Hotel Cabana de Sal, constructed out of salt blocks.
