Flora and Fauna of Chile Rhea
The lesser rhea, Pterocnemia pennata, is a large "bird generally a grey color
with white spots. Lower off-white parts. Long ocher to dull-brown neck. Long yellowish
legs. Dull brown horny beak.
Lives in open fields, generally in groups, and they run at high speeds.
There are two types of this bird in Chile. The Ñandú of Magellan, pterocnemia pennata
pennata, in the pampas of Aysén to Magellan, and introduced in the Tierra del Fuego;
and the Ñandú of the puna, terocnemia pennata tarapacensis, found in the plateau of
the Tarapacá, Antofagasta, and Atacama regions."
