Cape Horn - Cabo de Hornos
Photo of the Week - 07/02/2006
The southernmost tip of South America, Cape Horn, named for the Dutch city of Hoorn, is part of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago. The waters around the cape are dangerous. The strong winds, winds, large waves, and icebergs claim many a ship and sailor, yet before the Panama Canal, this was the way to sail from one side of South America to the other.
The waters still provide a challenge to yatchsmen and racing events. Cruise lines also pass by for a look at what was known as the "sailor's graveyard."
