Photo of the Week - 08/13/2006
Parque Arqueológico de San Agustín is a huge park in the Magdalena River gorge in southern Colombia where centuries ago, before the time of the Incas, people interred their dead in tombs guarded by fierce stone figures, some with animal features, some mythical, all intriguing to archaeologists and visitors alike.
There are differing theories about the dates and the origins of the San Augustin culture but it was well situated. The area is fertile, well-watered, supported wildlife and and agriculture in a mild climate.
These sculptures are among the many representing gods and important personages at their graves. The most important graves are protected by the male solar god and the female lunar god.
