Runkuragay Ruins on the Inca Trail
Photo of the Week - 08/12/2007

Even before trekkers on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu get there, they pass and can stop to see additional Inca ruins.
The small ovoid building overlooking the trail and the surrounding terrain may have been a defensive position guarding the route to Machu Picchu, or it may have served as a rest stop for couriers and travelers, then as now. Due to its shape, the building is also called the Egg Hut.
Found by Hiram Bingham as he explored routes to Machu Pichhu, the ruins encourage further exploration.
