Fiesta in San Pedro de Alausi, Ecuador
Photo of the Week - 05/18/2008
Dancers in the town of Alausi at the end of the railroad that once connected Guayaquil and Quito, Ecuador's two main cities, perform during a festival.
Riders aboard the Alausi Sibambe train may choose to sit inside or on the roof of the train for the scenic trip along a stretch of railway known as the Devil's Nose, and recognized as an engineering marvel. Now only a tourist attraction, the train leaves Riobamba early in the morning for a six-hour return trip. Many of the travelers get off the train in Alausi to continue by bus to other destinations, but others ride the train back for another view of the terrain that posed huge problems for the original engineers and laborers.
Alausi is a typical small town, with basic to medium accommodations and restaurants. If you have the time, climb the hill to the statue of San Pedro for a view of the town and surrounding countryside.
