Tajamar Del Rio Mapocho

Tajamar Del Rio Mapocho

The remains of the 18th century dike constructed during the governorship of Don Ambrosio O'Higgins (Bernardo's father) to hold back the flood waters of the Mapocho River were found during the excavations for Santiago's metro, or subway system. Designed by architect Joaquín Toesca, the dikes are constructed of bricks joined by a mixture of lime and eggwhite.
