Campanario of Tarapaca
The campanario, or bell tower, of the church in Tarapaca is separate from the main building. Like the church, it has been restored to its neo-classical lines.
Tarapaca is a small desert community famed in Chilean history as the site of a War of the Pacific battle on November 2, 1879 in which the Chilean forces met and defeated Peruvian and Bolivian armies. Following this battle, the Bolivian army took no further part in the conflict that ultimately gave this territory to Chile.
