Road to Salar de Huasco
Collahuasi Copper mining company built a portion of the paved road past the Pozo al Monte and the thickets of tamarugos, the leguminous tree native to Chile.
The road climbs steadily into more arid and higher desert. Altitude sickness, or puno, as it is called in Chile, makes itself felt. At 4,000 m or 13,200 ft, there are archaeological excavations. The turn to the salt flat is on this dirt road.
