Yareta

yareta at Salar de Huasco

Members of Mr. Fisk's group point to a "yareta (Azurella compacta), only growing in 3400-4000 meter height in that area. It forms 70-100 years old mamillated colonies some of which may grow to a couple of meter diameter. It is an extremely tough plant; the colonies are very dry and only the weakly divergent tips of the parallel rods forming the colonies are green. The yareta is able to survive extremely dry conditions, normally lives on sparse soil between rocks but may even survive on very arid edges of salt flats. Yareta is a very good fuel, containing only 8.5% water and 6% ashes."
