Visitor Requests

From time to time a visitor to this site has a question requiring a little research. You'll find the questions and the responses here.

Q.Hi We will be traveling to Venezuela in July. The area we are going to is about 60 miles from the San Antonio Airport. Tachira is the area. We are traveling with 3 children 5 10 & 12 years old. Do you think we have to be aware of anything special do we need anything like shots or pills?. We know not to drink the water. Thanking you in advance for your help. Arlene

R. Hi Arlene. Yes you're better off drinking bottled water and following the basic health precautions you'll find under the various links at Health Matters. Read the Health Information for Travelers to Tropical SA which has some recommendations for food inoculation etc but one thing to make sure is that everyone in your family has had their hepatitis shots. If you'll be going into the lowlands or swampy areas think about malaria and typhoid shots too.

No matter where you are going you might want to take some toilet paper and baby wipes with you. Immodium is a wonderful thing to take with you as are Tums or other upset stomach meds. Although you'll find lots of pharmacies in Venezuela for the usual aspirin etc if you have any special medication needs make sure you take an ample supply as well as a copy of the prescription. Don't forget the usual stuff like sunscreen!

Q.Question? Father lives in US-from Surinam; any Arawka Indians in Surinam? He is 1/2 Arawak...

R. www.sil.org/lla/suri.html#lg is the site about languages spoken in Suriname and mentions Arawak and "700 speakers out of 2,000 in the ethnic group in Surinam;" so yes to answer your question there are Arawak Indians living in Suriname.

Q. I am looking for a city called Melgar I think its in Cundinamarca but I do know that it is near Santafe Bogota. Really I would like to find a map that shows it location. I have seen the maps that the University of Texas at Austin has but none are detailed enough. If you can assist me in any way, link to somewhere else it is much appreciated.
thanks
Pat

A. Hi Pat. It took me a while but I found a map with Melgar on it attached below. I scanned it from a National Geographic map. Hope this is what you're looking for.
