| Episode 9: A Power Play Backfires! | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
At the beginning of Episode 9, Rob continued his ploy of plying Matt with untruths and
outrageous statements, misleading him and then chuckling as Matt fed the same misinformation
to Butch, on a "need to know" basis, who labeled it the chain of information. Rob is still
afraid of Matt and his machete, claiming Matt is still a threat to physical safety. Not surprising,
if Matt should find out how Rob's been using him.
Deena, fairly confident in her role as leader, saw Alex as a challenge and recruited
support to vote him off. Jenna promptly told Alex everything that Deena had said
and in turn, they shored up support for Alex. Rob as usual played the game both ways.
Christy, who is highly popular with Survivor viewers, continues to take part in all
activities and remain "safe."
During the night, a spider bit Heidi on the knee. The pain and swelling made her unable to
bend her knee or walk, so after whatever treatment was available in camp, Alex carried
Heidi to the Reward Challenge the next day.
The Reward Challenge was again a physical one, but Heidi was able to participate.
The Tribe was given bows and arrows, blow darts and guns, and spears to practice
their skills before demonstrating their proficiency with Amazonian traditional weapons.
Matt moved quickly into the lead with the blow darts, but Butch, Deena and Alex joined
him in Round Two, with the spears. Alex and Matt won that round, and Alex bested Matt
with the bow and arrow, winning the reward: an afternoon in the Amazon Cafe cofffe bar
which he elected to share with Jenna.
Jenna and Alex gorged themselves with pastries, iced lattes, espressos and quiet
conversation, and on their return to camp, riding a caffein buzz, Alex shared cookies with the group and
offered to take the first fire watches.
The Immunity Challenge, posed the question: Immunity or Food? Each contestant was
offered an Amazonian menu of delicacies found in their camp. There were four courses,
and the contestants who ate and swallowed their food first went on to the next course.
Beginning with grasshoppers, moving on to grub worms, then beetles, and ending with a live beetle
larva, it was definitely a matter of mind over matter. Matt, Deena, Alex, Rob, Butch and
Christy, with trouble, managed the grasshopper round, but Jenna flatly refused to participate.
Deena, Christy, Matt and Alex swallowed the rowms, but only Matt and Deena got past the
beetles. Deena balked at the live larva, while Matt swallowed it, giving him immunity.
This pleased Deena, who wanted him to win so that the Tribe would vote Alex, as the
strongest competitor off. However, Jenna and Alex had managed to garner enough support
from the others, so only Christy and Deena voted for Alex. In a power play reversal,
Deena was voted off.
She joins Dave on the jury that will choose between the
two final contestants to select the Sole Survivor. How will they vote for the members
who voted them off?
Episode 10 teaser:
Question for the Tribal members: how bad do they want to win and what will they
do to win?
Jenna and Heidi share some happy tears while the alliances and strategies grow more intense.
Who'll be the next contestant to be voted off? Man or woman?
