Lonely Planet's Shoestring Guide to South America is a comprehensive, updated Guidebook that covers the whole of the South America, from the Darien Gap in Panama to the tip of Tierra del Fuego.

Each country has its own section, written by one of the authors, and the tone varies but the structure is consistent. There is an overall introduction to the country, with background information on history, geography with maps, culture, and language help. Facts for the Visitor include travel documentation, customs, currency, travel recommendations, holidays and events, practical considerations such as health and safety, business customs, food and drink, accommodations, activities, and highlights. Travel information to the country, and within the country, is nicely detailed. The various regions of the country are described, and within each region, there is a detailed section for each major city and tourist attraction. As a plus, descriptions and recommendations for the less visited, off the beaten track attractions are included.

The city guides contain detailed maps, places to stay and visit, activities, tours, description of local cuisine and recommended eating habits, particular cultural customs, and getting around information.

Each of the authors has traveled extensively in South America, for business and pleasure, and many have written individual guidebooks for one or more South American countries. Their enthusiasm for the subject shines in the care and detail they give their section. The book is 1176 pages, a little larger than pocket sized, but no traveler should be without it. Pre-reading before travel is essential to grasp the flavor and nuances. Reading and reference while on the spot will save the visitor to South America many a misstep. Aimed at the budget-minded tourist, the guidebook provides full value to all travelers.
