Algae Colored Snow at Deception Island

Algae Colored Snow at Deception Island

Peter and Jackie Main
These aren't fields of wildflowers but strips of algae coloring the ice and snow.

The warmth of the soil, due to the varying microclimates, supports the growth of these simple plants, much more at home in moist tropical areas than the Antarctic.
