Volcanic Deception Island

Peter and Jackie Main
Formed by volcanic action, with an entrance to the sea and a large bay from a sunken caldera, Deception Island is still subject to volcanic activity.

The highest point of the island is Mt Pond, at 542 m (1778 ft. Over half the island is covered by glaciers, and there are several coves within the protected bay.

There are two remaining research stations here, belonging to Argentina and Spain. The British station was partially destroyed by a 1969 eruption.
