Who doesn't recognize this monument as a symbol of Buenos Aires?
Designed by architect Alberto Prebisch, the obelisk is 67 m (220 feet) high and its base area is 49 square m (530 square feet). It was erected in May 1936 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the founding of the city, and in the years since has been the site of political and sports demonstrations.
Recently renovated and repainted in a off-white color, the obelisk is located in the center of the Plaza de la República, the spot where the Argentine flag was flown for the first time in Buenos Aires, at the intersection of Nueve de Julio and Corrientes avenues.
