Northeast of La Paz, the Yungas separate the altiplano and the Amazonian rainforsts of northern Bolivia.

The Yungas are densely forested, with steep cliffs overhanging deep river valleys. They are humid, green, and difficult to traverse.

For many years, the only route between La Paz and the town of Coroico consisted of a narrow, dirt track hugging the sides of cliffs, where multiple accidents claimed many lives, earning the road the infamous label of the World's Most Dangerous Road.

A new, paved road is recently completed, cutting the travel time between La Paz and Coroico down to about two hours, a safer, faster route, but some travelers still use the old road, at their own risk and peril.

For bicycle riders, it presents an incomparable, thrilling ride.
