Altiplano in Southwest Bolivia

Peter and Jackie Main
The altiplano and the Salar de Uyuni occupy a large part of southwestern Bolivia. The salar is larger than the Great Salt Lake in the US, and is thought to have been a closed basin filled with water since the last glacial age. At one time, water from the Salar de Coipasa, about 7 m higher, flowed into the salar, but now the only water coming into the area is from Rio Grande de Lipez and from some small drainages to the east.
