Some of the business owners who operate a shop within a building complain that the street vendors pay no taxes, but tradition and the ease of strolling along to select goods isn't likely to go away.
Take the time to investigate the goods sold in these street markets. You'll find musical instruments, including the charango, a miniature guitar made from an armadillo shell. It has fifteen strins that the player strums and plucks like a full sized guitar. You might also find the single reed flutes, guenas, the deep wooden pipes called zampoñas, drums and a variety of rattles. You'll enjoy hearing these at a peña club, where musicians play them to the unforgettable, and often sad Andean music.
