Northeastern Region of Brazil

Attractions, sightseeing, geography, sports and recreation in the states of Bahia, Pernambuco, Sergipe, Alagoas, Paraiba, Rio Grande do Norte, Olinda, Ceará, Maranhão, Piaui and the cities of Salvador de Bahia, Porto Seguro, Recife, Natal, Fortaleza and São Luis.
Chapada Diamantina - Brazil's "Lost World"
Chapada Diamantina National Park in Brazil's Bahia state is called the Lost World, compared to the Grand Canyon and to Jurassic Park landscape, but the region stands on its own for the fantastic rock formations, rivers and waterfalls, and a vast underground river system that creates astonishingly beautiful caves that attract divers and spelunkers all year around.
Exploring Brazil's Northeast
The Northeastern states of Alagoas, Bahia, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Piaui and Sergipe are different from the rest of Brazil. The population is more heavily African and mestizo, the cuisine is spicier, the weather hot and dry. The beaches are excellent, and the nightlife as hot and spicy as the climate.
Fernando de Noronha
This spectacularly scenic archipelago off the northeastern coast of Brazil is a paradise for divers and snorkelers for the crystalline, warm waters and variety of marine life.
Visit Alagoas, Sergipe and Pernambuco, Brazil
Alagoas state is small, but growing as a tourist destination. The beaches are excellent, and inland, lush sugarcane fields abound. Sergipe is the smallest Brazilian state and is home to colonial cities. Pernambuco is not large, yet it is huge in Brazilian history. The capital, Recife, is located partly on an island and partly on the mainland. Because of the numerous canals through the city, Recife is called the Venice of Brazil.
Visit Paraiba and Piauí, Brazil
Paraíba state has an interesting if unsettling past. Indigenous people lived in the area long before the Portuguese arrived and did not take kindly to them. The coastline in the state of Paui isn't very long, but the beaches are wonderful. The capital, Teresina, was named for Brazilian Empress Teresa Cristina Maria, but now the city has a definite middle Eastern flavor in the names of its streets and hotels.
Visit Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará and Maranhão, Brazil
Brazil's state of Rio Grande do Norte occupies the northernmost curve of Brazil, with miles of beaches to tempt the sunseeker. Ceará, was once one of Brazil's poorest states, but 600 km of coastline and magnificent beaches has now made a difference. Maranhã is second only to Bahia in size, and its capital is called the top reggae center of the Northeast.
Visit Salvador, Brazil: Bahia, Beaches, Carnaval, Candomble
The state of Bahia occupies 216,612 sq mi (559,921 sq km) at the southern end of Brazil's northeastern region. Most visitors go to Bahia for the capital city of Salvador, sometimes also called Bahia, and the neighboring beach communities. Carnaval is a major event here and the beaches are superb.
Brazil: The North East
Called the "Golden Coast" for the 3,500 kilometers (2,175 miles) of palm-fringed, sandy-white beaches blessed by a continuous summer climate and the never ceasing delightful swing of the typical "forro", "frevo", "ciranda", " maracatu" and "lambada" dances.
Chapada Diamantina - Bahia
"A primeira vez que estive na Chapada Diamantina foi de deixar de queixo caido. Aquelas formações rochosas eram paisagem de outro mundo, e a cidade de Lençois é simplesmente contagiante com seus casarões e seus interessantes habitantes."
Chapada Diamantina
"Bahia's heart rests in the Chapada Diamantina, this mountainous region, an imposing landscape of high plains and dramatic mesas, is the source of 90% of the tributaries of the Paraguacu, Jacuipe and Contas rivers basins."
Fortaleza
Photos and information about the city and the state of Ceara by Sergio Koreisha.
Fortaleza
With a population of more than 2 million, it is considered the second most important city in the region in economic terms, after Salvador in Bahia. History, tourism, culture and sports from Wikipedia.
Fortaleza, Brazil
Geography, weather, transportation and otehr tips from BootsnAll.
Hotel Listing - Fortaleza
"Located only two degrees south of the equator, this authentic tropical paradise welcomes thousands of visitors every year who are fascinated with the wide beaches, the sea of warm green waters, the brightness, the historical monuments, the handicrafts, and the local customs and traditions."
Lencois Marenhenses
"Lencois forms a matchless desert, formed by dunes of very white sands tens of meters high, replete with lagoons of sweet and crystalline water, pure rivers and beaches as deserted as wild..."
Pernambuco
"Pernambuco was one of the first areas in Brazil to be occupied by the Portuguese. In 1535, Duarte Coelho was awarded the Captaincy, founded the town of Olinda and set up the first sugar mills in the region."
The Chapada's wild wonders
"The exceptionally dramatic landscape is by turns lush and arid, with rocky peaks and Xanadu-like wetlands, picture-postcard waterfalls and eerily lighted underground caverns, all accessible within a park that's about half the size of Yosemite."
