Maranhão

By Bonnie Hamre, About.com

The state of Maranhão, 126,897 sq mi (328,663 sq km), is second only to Bahia in size, but has a much smaller population. It has always been an agricultural and livstock raising area, and had been inhabited by the Tupinambás peoples before the Portuguese began colonizing the area in 1534.

São Luís is the capital of Maranhão, and is a pleasant, attractive city with a strong traditional folklore. Located on São Luís Island in São Marcos Bay, it was founded in 1612 by the French and named for Louis XIII. The name changed when the Portuguese captured the city in 1615. The Dutch occupied the area from 1641 to 1644. The old colonial portion of the city is a must-see for visitors. Browse through the museums, the Catedral da Sé, built in 1726 by the Jesuits, and take a look at the French-built fortress now called the Palácio dos Leões now the state governor's home.

São Luís is called the top reggae center of the Northeast, and you'll hear it day and night along with the pagode music. Nightclubs and nightlife are very active. The main festivals occur in July with the Tambor de Mina festivals, Bumba Meu Boi festival from June to August, and of course, carnaval.

Alcântara, across São Marcos Bay, is now abandoned and a national historic monument, but was once considered more fashionable and aristocratic. Now the satellite launch facility there provides a distinct contrast.

The beaches north of the city, in São Francisco are thronged on weekends and holidays. Parque Nacional dos Lençis Maranhenses attracts visitors to its beaches, lagoons, dunes and wildlife. There isn't much in the way of amenities, but a trip by boat upriver from Barreirinhas will give you an overnight stay.

Enjoy a relaxed and inviting stay in Brazil's northeastern region of great beaches, sun and sand.

Boa viagem!
