There are over twenty churches in town. Some were founded by various religious or lay orders and some were aimed at specific congregations, such as the workers in the mines.
The artwork in the churches reflect their origins and cultures. Many contain frescoes and murals showing daily work with a religious slant. There is a great deal of gold encrusted objects and ornate decorations.
Other churches display statues and façades sculpted by Aleijadinho, little cripple. According to legend, when he lost the use of his hands and feet, he strapped chisels and hammers to his arms and with the help of assistants, continued with his work. The most famous of his carvings are the Twelve Apostles.
Don't miss the "Igreja de Sao Francisco de Assis, the most impressive of the town's many baroque churches. In addition to designing the structure, Aleijadinho was responsible for the wood and soapstone sculptures on the portal, high altars, pulpits, and crossing arch."
Overlooked and Underrated: Ouro Preto, Brazil.
