Option 1: Trek from San Bartolo to Rio Grande Village

This is an all day trek, walking through some typical Atacama desert scenes. You'll see vast vistas, perhaps some snow on the Andean peaks, and as you near the farming village of Rio Grande, herds of llamas and the village fields.

Camp overnight at Rio Grande.

Option 2: San Pedro de Atacama to Guatin and Puritama

Begin the day with a hike toward the Purifica River on ancient Indian trails in the Guatin canyon, 9,996 ft (3000 m). You'll see a variety of cactus such as the Cactus Copaquilla and a number of fresh water pools on the way to the Baños de Puritima at 11220 ft (3400 m). After a relaxing dip in the hot springs, return to San Pedro, where you'll have the afternoon and evening to explore on your own.

Tip:

The clear desert skies offer great stargazing opportunities. See if you can spot the Southern Star and other southern hemisphere constellations.
