Carnaval in Barranquilla, Colombia

By Bonnie Hamre, About.com

Carnaval in Barranquilla, Colombia resounds with salsa music, rumbas and gaiety. Celebrated like all carnivals in the days just before Lent, the warm summer weather lends itself to brief and exotic costumes and a grand parade with floats and musicians. Carnaval brings together people from all walks of life and ages who celebrate las fiestas de Momo.

Held 40 days before each Easter (see dates for Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday Dates) Easter climaxing with three festive days (Saturday, Sunday & Monday) of parades, parties, music and dancing, Barranquilla's carnaval gets wilder and more lavish every year, with spectacular floats, a reigning queen of the carnaval, musical events and the theme of it all is rumbear hasta que el cuerpo aguante - frolic until you drop.

A cranival proclamation states that that everyone must enjoy themselves, dance and party wildly. And everyone does their best to live up to that rule! Read one visitor's account in Barranquilla's Carnival an event to remember.
