Located just a short distance outside San Pedro de Atacama, Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley) is the region's largest draw to the Atacama desert.
The landscape is a part of the Cordillera de la Sal (Salt Mountain Range), millenia of floods and wind erosion have combined with salt formations to give the area a sparse, moon-like appearance.
The land is part of Los Flamencos National Reserve, a project aiming to protect the resources of the ancestral land by supporting tourism efforts that cause minimal environmental damage to the area.
