Tarapaca is a small town in the province of the same name. The town was the site of a War of the Pacific battle on November 2, 1879 in which the Chilean forces met and defeated Peruvian and Bolivian armies. Following this battle, the Bolivian army took no further part in the conflict that ultimately gave this territory to Chile.
