Valparaiso and Isla Negra
Tourism, attractions, accommodations, food and drink, sports and recreation and practical information.
Valparaiso is an historic port. Important in colonial times, economically booming during the nitrate rush and the California Gold Rush, buildings and houses crowd the steep hills and elevators called ascensores provide transportation up and down the many hills overlooking the Bay of Valparaiso.
Nobel Poet Pablo Neruda lived in a house on Isla Negra overlooking the Pacific ocean south of Vaparaiso. The eccentrically designed house is now a museum containing his works, his collections and a vivid look at the lifestyle of Chile's beloved man of letters.
Valparaiso is Chile's main seaport with a tradition strong in commerce and naval history. It is also the home of the National Congress.
This article, like the others contributed by Sr. Fisk, is in Spanish. It is an account of his visits to Valparaiso to view the murals in the Open Air Museum.
Pablo Neruda enjoyed collecting things that caught his eye, and you'll see some of them in these pictures of his home, now a museum.

"Hostal Morgan is located on Cerro Alegre, just in the middle of the cultural and bohemian lifestyle of Valparaiso. Also, the finest restaurants in the city are literally at walking distance."
"Located in the heart of Cerro Alegre and facing an impressive view of the bay of Valparaíso, Casa Higueras is the first boutique + design hotel to open in this port town. Following a careful restoration, this 1920s mansion has been converted into a charming hotel."
The climate of this area led first to agricultural success and now to vacationer's delight. The biggest event is the Festividad de Nuestra Señora Purísima de las 40 horas, celebrated the last Sunday in February.
Its older streets and buildings speak to you strongly of the days when there was no Panama Canal and almost every ship that came around The Horn stopped and left a little of itself and its crew here.
