This impressive building with its French neoclassical design and Corinthian pillars dates from 1901 and was the site of the National Congress until the coup d'état on September 11, 1973 which dissolved Congress.

The Congreso Nacional was moved to Valparaiso under General Augusto Pinochet. This building now contains some of the the offices of the Foreign Ministry.

Opposite the Congreso are the headquarters of the Tribunales de Justicia, the Law Courts, also called Palacio de los Tribunales. Once the site of the first National Government Assembly, this imposing building is home to the Supreme Court, the Appeals Court, and the Military Court. You can enter to stroll down a main hallway lit by the vaulted metal and glass ceiling that runs the length of the building.

From these two grand civic buildings, follow Morandé a block to the huge Plaza de la Constitución, the site of the famous Palacio de la Moneda, the Government Palace that was first built as headquarters of the Royal Mint.
